The left-hander was beaten up by the Orioles for six runs in 6 1/3 innings Tuesday, his worst start since late May. Sabathia, who has won 19 games three times in his career without hitting the 20 mark, will have four more tries to reach the magic number.

"We're still in a race, still trying to win this division," Sabathia said. "That's the most important thing."

Sabathia had pitched to a 2.73 ERA in four wins against the Orioles this season, but Baltimore was aggressive against the Yankees' ace, swinging early and often at his fastball as he struggled to get his off-speed pitches across for strikes.

"He just seemed to be a little off tonight," manager Joe Girardi said.
